Overview

Civil engineers play a vital role in creating the built environment and in protecting the natural environment. They bring together science and art to create much of the tangible fabric of today’s society. Graduates of the civil engineering program may work as construction, environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, transportation or water resource engineers.

New Model Speeds Up Ship Scheduling at Busiest Port

Researchers at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering developed a new mathematical model to help marine container terminals decide where and when to dock arriving ships, cutting wait times and operating costs. The model uses two advanced optimization techniques, Benders decomposition and column generation, to solve scheduling problems for hundreds of vessels faster than existing methods.
