Engineering Student Devin Nobles Crowned Mister FAMU

Devin Nobles was crowned Mister Florida A&M University 2023 at the annual coronation held at FAMU’s Lee Hall auditorium.

Coronation has been a FAMU tradition for more than 31 years. Miss and Mister Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University are university ambassadors and positive representatives with Class Attendants and Royal Escorts. Students in the FAMU Royal Court foster school pride and unity and serve as ambassadors for the university. 

Nobles, a third-year electrical and computer engineering student at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, hails from Mobile, Alabama. He shared thoughts about engineering, life, and his new role as Mister FAMU.

What is it like to be Mister FAMU and represent your university and engineering?

It is a tremendous honor to serve as Mister FAMU and represent not only my university but also my college, the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Every time I step into the NSBE room, I'm greeted with shouts of 'Mister FAMU!' It never fails to energize me. I've had numerous fellow Rattler Engineers stop me, expressing their pride in my role as an engineer and how I've inspired some of them to become more engaged on campus. If you examine the history, Mister FAMU and other positions on the royal court have traditionally been associated with non-STEM majors like business, journalism, or the arts. I take great pride in breaking that stereotype and being the first Mister FAMU from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

How will you use the platform to serve the students at the university?

While the primary responsibility of Mister FAMU and the royal court is to recruit new students during the presidential recruitment tours, I am committed to going beyond this duty. We have planned a series of social events, professional development activities, initiatives related to mental health, voter literacy, and community service projects for this semester and the next. It‘s essential that the students who elected me see and experience the tangible impact of this position.

What issues are important to you?

My most profound passion lies in empowering the youth. Investing in the younger generation is one of the most promising investments one can make, offering a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. Today's youth are tomorrow’s trailblazers; so, investing in their mental and emotional well-being, education, interests, and professional development is crucial. While my mind is dedicated to engineering, my heart is with people.

How do you want to impact the world?

I hope that long after I’ve moved on from this position, left the university or returned to the dust, people will remember me as someone who inspired them. Throughout my life, many individuals have pushed me to strive for more, do more and be more, and they are all responsible for who I am today. I hope that, in my absence, people will reflect and say, ‘He inspired me.’

Why did you choose engineering? 

I have a natural aptitude for math and science, and I find great satisfaction in applying these skills to real-world challenges. Engineers are the backbone of technological advancements across all aspects of society, and I take pride in the responsibility of that role. Plus, the earning potential in engineering is quite appealing. The best part about the major is continually pushing the boundaries of what we know and have available, progressively creating new technological innovations to enhance efficiency or even develop something entirely new.

What kind of research or projects are you most inspired about?

This past summer (Summer 2023), I had the privilege of conducting research in wireless communication, focusing on utilizing ultrawideband technology to develop an indoor tracking system. This project excites me because of its limitless real-world applications. Engaging in this research reaffirms my path to pursue a Ph.D. and contribute to academia.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

I intend to continue my education and research in wireless communication and obtain a Ph.D. Following that, I aspire to work for technology giants like Google, Microsoft, or Amazon as a software development engineer specializing in embedded systems. Once I’ve gained valuable experience in the private sector, I plan to return to my illustrious university and give back in any way I can.
