Dr. Geoffrey Brooks was born in Pensacola Florida, on March 4, 1959 and graduated from Holmes County High School in northwest Florida in 1977. He received the BSEE in 1981 and MSEE in 1992 from the University of Florida and the first PhD in electrical engineering from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department in 1996.

He joined the ECE faculty in August, 2001, teaching, recruiting and advising at Florida State University Panama City Campus (FSU-PC). He has successfully directed several master's theses and has been instrumental in bringing the ECE programs to the branch campus. One FSU-PC BSEE graduate has received a prestigious Pentagon assignment from the local navy base while another has passed a PhD qualifying exam. He has developed a unique course in biomimetics, which explores the development of sensory systems leveraging natural sensory paradigms.

From 1999 to 2001 he served as lead engineer for the world's first mobile infrared scene projector system (MIRSP) while employed with the Modeling and Simulation Division, US Army Aviation Technical Test Center, Ft Rucker, AL. He successfully directed simulated flight tests that were used to refine missile target detection/tracking algorithms (Lockheed/Martin, Orlando).

From 1989 to 1999 he served the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Munitions Directorate at Eglin AFB, FL. He managed advanced signal processing research and development programs, including biologically-inspired signal processing algorithms and sensory architectures. He was awarded a surf-zone image analysis research grant from the navy (NWSC, Panama City) focused on investigating natural sensory object classification algorithms. Other activities included directing high-school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-doc summer research participants.

Form 1981 to 1989 he served as a co-op engineer for DuPont (mineral mining, 1981), offshore oil exploration engineer (Schlumberger, 1981), signal processing engineer for submarine sonar systems (Naval Underwater Systems Center, 1983), ship-board integration engineer for a combat simulation test system (NSWC, Panama City, 1984), assembly software developer for an acoustic device countermeasure (NSWC, 1985), countermeasure evaluator software developer (NSWC, 1986), missile software engineer (AMRAAM, Eglin AFB 1987), and F-15 test engineer (Eglin test wing, 1988-1989).
