Project Over View

Danfoss Turbocor commissioned a new compressor test facility at the Tallahassee FL R&D Laboratory in 2011. Since that time, the company has developed compressors that have have greated height than can be installed with the existing gantry and crane.

Danfoss Turbocor requires that each half-ton compressor be tested on the chiller system to ensure quality control. Each time the new compressor is ready for testing, a mechanical engineer must employ the use of a manual chain hoist to lift and install the compressor onto the chiller system. Danfoss Turbocor has sponsored a team of 5 mechanical engineering students to solve this problem, which will have detrimental effects on manufacturing in the future.

Team 5 has completed their senior design project and presented a final product to Turbocor. They were pleased with our product and plan on implementing the system at Turbocor's Facility. Over the course of the year Team 5 scheduled routine meetings with Turbocor in order to facilitate a cohesive relationship. During these meetings, Team 5 presented risk assessments, detailed project specification, design analysis, fabrication processes, and project time-lines. The end result was a solution that did not implement the use of an Offset Lifting Bar, but did raise the compressor to a sufficient vertical distance with use of a Variable Center of Gravity Lifting System.

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Senior Design

Fall 2014

During the fall semester teams are to develop ideas, conduct concept creation and establish a final design to solve the problem tasked to them. This includes initial assessment, simple hand drawings of possible plans, elimination of inadequate ideas, CAD Drawings of potential solutions and full analysis of final design.

Spring 2015

The spring semester is left for physical product development. This consists of ordering materials required, creating and testing prototypes and producing a final functioning product.

The Goal Of Senior Design

It is assumed that a graduating engineer will have mastered all the skills within the traditional disciplines. The purpose of the Senior Design Project is to pull them all together and apply them towards the design and implementation of a 'product', and to offer the students an opportunity to experience team-based design under conditions that closely resemble those that will be encountered in industry. Students must develop and sharpen skills in team organization, time management, self-discipline, and technical writing, in order to be successful in this course. An important goal of this course is to expose students to a 'hands-on' experience in which they have to specify, design, and produce a full-system with the help of the 'customer'. This objective has to be accomplished while working as a team, and under time pressure.
