Engineering Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Group

Story by
Tisha Keller

This past year has been full of challenges and changes—some good and some quite hard. To my mind, one of the silver linings of the pandemic has been our focus on the Let’s Start Here initiative and the work we’ve accomplished so far. We should be proud that, as a group, much progress was made during 2020-2021, including:

  • Engaging our consultant, Jyotsna Vanapalli, from the DDNRC
  • Monthly committee calls since October 2020
  • Six subcommittees formed and Focus Statements developed for each
  • LSH Leadership Committee chair and vice chair installation
  • Virtual training for LSH members on “Embracing Diversity”
  • The HEDS Survey completion and results presentation to university leadership and LSH committee
  • LSH statement on Asian Hate & Discrimination developed and disseminated
  • Onsite and virtual meetings with DDNRC consultant for key leadership, plus committee members
  • “Let’s Start in the Classroom” onsite engineering faculty training setup for Aug 9
  • Envisioning fall events and a vibrant LSH agenda on the campus

One of the key insights we heard from our consultant was that the LSH committee needed to be more formalized as an advisory body. To that end, I’m announcing the formation of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Advisory Committee. This group will pick up where the LSH Leadership Committee left off and carry us forward through the 2021-22 academic year. Specifically, this group will voluntarily engage more students, staff and faculty through DEI peer groups and activities.

  • DEI Advisory Group (formal committee assignment with regular meetings)
  • DEI Volunteer (events, etc)
  • DEI Champion (diversity/inclusion ambassador, faculty/staff mentor, etc.)
  • DEI Influencer (sharing personal journey, special skills, willing to be featured in social/publications/website on DEI topics)
