The Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU) College of Engineering seeks a visionary and accomplished academic and administrative leader as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). The next ME Chair will work closely with the Dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the leadership team to further its goal of becoming a top college of engineering. Current focus research areas of the department include Thermal-Fluids, Aeronautics & Propulsion, Robotics, Magnet Technology, and Advanced Materials. The ME department plays a critical role in the College of Engineering’s strategic plan including Next Generation Air and Space Transport System, and Robotics. The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a unique institution that combines two outstanding universities with overlapping but distinct missions – FAMU, the nation’s top public HBCU (historically black college or university) with FSU, the nation’s 26th ranked public university and one of the State of Florida’s three Preeminent Research Universities. As such, we provide an outstanding research and entrepreneurship based education to one of the most diverse student populations in the US. Faculty positions at the college are tenured at either Florida A&M University or Florida State University, but all faculty have joint status at both universities.
The ME Department currently has approximately 28 faculty, 85 graduate students, 360 undergraduate students and annual expenditures in excess of $6.5 million. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and have an exemplary record of scholarly activities. The next ME Chair is expected to possess strong administrative skills, be a leading expert in a research area critical to the department and passionate about undergraduate and graduate education. The vision of the chair for the department and the ability to attract additional faculty are especially important. Candidates with national and international visibility are preferred. Experience with multidisciplinary collaborations is valued. The successful candidate must have the creativity and ability to lead a faculty representing a diversified range of interests and recognize the importance and role of teaching in the context of a leading research-focused institution. The Chair will oversee curriculum development, serve as a mentor and evaluator of the faculty, and facilitate a collegial and productive work environment for a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. The chair is expected to lead the faculty and students in their quest for excellence in education and research and create a vision and long-term goals for the department. The Chair will work closely with the ME Advisory Board, building relationships with industrial supporters and alumni.
