Trailblazer lands postdoctoral fellowship to address environmental justice and health disparities

Florida A&M University (FAMU) and FAMU-FSU College of Engineering graduate Nemmi Cole, Ph.D., recently received a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Division of Environmental Health at the University of Southern California. The award addresses environmental justice issues and health disparities in conjunction with the Department of Population & Public Health Sciences and the Keck School of Medicine, at USC.

Cole will lead community-driven justice projects that focus on industrial pollution, health disparities, community science, and community engagement in Southern California. She will have the opportunity to assess environmental health hazards, including drinking water quality that affects stressed communities of color, in partnership with environmental justice organizations across the southern part of the state.

Under the advisement of Clayton J. Clark II, a professor in civil and environmental engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Cole received her doctorate from the department in the summer of 2021. The civil and environmental engineering graduate was also named a new Black Trailblazer in Engineering (BTE) Fellow by Purdue University in the Fall. The goal of the BTE program at Purdue Engineering is to prepare future trailblazing faculty in engineering.

The focus is to prepare outstanding scholars who are committed to increasing the success of black engineers. As a selected BTE fellow, Cole will attend a workshop and receive training and opportunities for scientific interactions, career-oriented discussions and networking.
