The Human Torch, member of the Fantastic Four (Marvel Comics), is an example of unsteady state heat transfer at work.  When Johnny Storm is forced to take on the forces of evil, he spontaneously turns on his flaming powers.  He increases his body temperature to that of fire, but he does not burn.  His temperature increases rapidly and varies over time.  The Human Torch is able to control his temperature so that he does not burn everything around him.  Click on his picture to learn more about Unsteady State Heat Transfer.
